Big Picture of Pencak Silat Pertempuran

The last post I spoke about the name of Pencak Silat Pertempuran, it's foundations and reason for use.

in this blog post, I want to address one of the "Big Picture" ideas behind the formulation of PSP. There are several.

Pencak Silat Pertempuran was, and is, meant to be a workshop for pencak silat community for those who share in its foundation.

What does that mean? Everyone who participates in PSP has a legitimate stake in the direction and evolution of PSP. Likewise, it can, and will BE, whatever YOU make of it.

That said, it is my expectation that instructors of PSP will, not only grow themselves and their students skills, but that they will also bring that knowledge and growth back to the nucleus to be discussed, analyzed, dissected, and assimilated into the PSP curriculum. It is meant for the growth of all. I have shared my knowledge with you, be honorable and share your knowledge to me. Don't hoard it away or run off on your own, disappearing into the mist.

I don't expect robots in performance, in teaching, or in expression. The individual pesilat must bring themselves into PSP. By doing so, they are bound to see it differently, and their vision for it changes the course of PSP forever. That's the beauty and struggle of martial arts.

There can be no doubt that I have ideas that I'm trying to communicate with the material and I've created a curriculum that is based on the sweat of generations, including my own BUT it is not sacred. If the curriculum needs to change, then let's change it—together! Don't criticize, instead critique and offer value. Help instead of harm. Do what's right instead of acting selfishly.

I have few expectations as the founder of Pencak Silat Pertempuran but I do have some. One expectation is the acknowledgment of where you learned and bringing your brothers and sisters within Pencak Silat Pertempuran (and other pesilat) along with you as you grow, or helping those struggling by giving them what they need. Likewise, this could include the greater pencak silat community.

I'm not looking for a kickback on your teaching and I won't strip away your instructor ranking. I gave you what I gave you because you earned it. Bring honor to it by sharing with the whole family.

Combat Silat Pecut / Whip

Pencak Silat Pertempuran utilizes the Pecutan or whip as not only a method of self-offense but also as a method of development for body mechanics.

The whip can be used as a great tool for strengthening a choke, catching a limb, and even for performing takedowns.

The Pecutan is a versatile tool that can be used to strike from the ankles to well above the head and anywhere in between.

Some martial arts prefer a longer whip but in reality the short whip, approximately 6 feet in length, is the preferred whip. With a shorter motion for power development it can be redeployed much faster to another direction or height. Additionally, two Pecutan or an additional weapon such as the Clurit can be used in concert with the whip. The longer the whip, the more difficult it becomes to employ a second weapon because the applicable ranges are so extreme.

In Combat Silat, we aim to make the jurus2 tangan the core of the system and as such, there are no unique jurus2 for senjata or weapons. You simply have the freedom to apply any weapon to a jurus. As a result, your jurus2 may not be the same as mine, depending on what you emphasize in your jurus2 tangan.

For my money, the longer I study and train in pencak silat, the more that enjoy the study, application, and benefits of the Pecutan within that study. It is an art unto itself, even within the system that provides its framework.

Below are a few simple videos demonstrating some basic Pecutan.

Keluarga - Pencak Silat Pertempuran 2007 Training Camp

So this years pencak silat training camp has come and gone. By far the best one to date. We covered most of the curriculum in three days sans the drills and a few other things. Literally.

On Friday we had a 12 hour day and this is what we did.

Of course, we finished at around 830pm and everyone was pretty tired but that's not too bad considering no one had eaten dinner yet. We all went to our respective abodes and showered up and a portion of us met for dinner. It was great fun and people got to see the similarities between the movements and also I showed how it could be fit together depending on the situation.

Saturday everyone was sore AND it was raining hard so we worked under a pavilion during the early part of the day.

We started with:
Gerak
Sikap Pasang

Led by Pelatih Bill Dwyer.

Then we went into the Jurus-jurus Tangan, Jurus-jurus Harimau (for Pelatih Bill), and Jurus-jurus Kombinasi for those who were interested. It was great fun to show the movements of the jurus-jurus come alive from yesterday's training and to show a few pounds of applications from just a few movements.

Again we finished around 830p or so. Got cleaned up and went out for dinner. It was a great time with good conversations and lots of friendships being developed.

Sunday we continued on throwing on top of the jurus the basic movements of golok/stick, how the Ales and Masukan might work against an armed assailant, how we might use them with a weapon ourselves, and how to do the jurus-jurus with a weapon. Then I went on to do a few minor applications just to show the concept and build the jurus-jurus movements. Later in the day we added Ikat and explosive entries to the training.

Really, in three days, you can't ask for anything more than that, but be assured, that in years to come as people continue to develop and grow in their skills, Keluarga is going to be a great place for training with some of the best guru-silat in the U.S.

Pencak Silat Class Tuesday 1/23/07

The Tuesday class was mostly a private lesson for Doug. He and I got to work out together which was nice for me. I don't get to workout as often as I'd like with a training partner so that was reall good.

We started out with more Harimau Monyet work trying to get the legs going, hips going, knees going, whatever... We did about 30 minutes of this type of work, but rather than just do a single thing or two with lots of repititions, we worked a bunch of variations of things with sets of 10 or 15 each. Enough to get the feel of it but not enough to get bored with it and not really burn out on it either. It was good to be able to do it this way because we flowed various harimau monyet things together in little min-series. I like doing that and we'll probably do a lot more of that.

After that we went right into Level 3 work which is where Rocco and Doug are. Doug and I worked pretty good at the Exchanges, Trapping, and catching. About this time Rocco showed up. It was probably almost 8 or even later. (Shame Shame). Of course I had to stop showing Doug all the secret stuff then because Rocco came...

Then we caught Rocco up on most of the Level 3 stuff of course Rocco strategically misses the conditioning portion and he probably thinks that's a good thing but in reality, the little bit of workout he could get by doing it would probably do his knees a ton of good over time and build a lot of strength and flexibility... but what do I know...

Anyway, then we finished off with checks and worked Jurus Tiga. For a moment these guys were actually looking like silat pesilat. It was startling. A few tweaks here and there and Doug was "striking a pose." Rocco followed and with a little work they could meet the deadline of testing this Saturday. It's up to them, but just about 1/2 hour a day of jurus tiga would probably do it for each of them.

Saturday 1/20/2007 Pencak Silat Class

Saturday we had class with Rocco, Todd, and Doug there. We warmed up with some Monyet and Harimau, stretching, crocodile falling push-ups, and Ales Lima or Lutut Jatuh depending on your perspective.

We went on to practice catches, exchanges, trapping, and checking. After that we went through jurus tiga.

After class we did some more filming of pisau material and a few pisau bela diri. The pisau bela diri included the knife along side the neck, in the stomach, in front of the throat, and point on the side of the neck. There are more I will be doing - though I might just make a bela diri dvd that has all types of different bela diri on it - not just pisau bela diri. Maybe gun, empty hand, kicks, tackles, etcetera. This is stuff that needs to be addressed.

Anyway, it was a good class. I'm a few posts behind so expect several within a few days.

Pencak Silat Pertempuran Class -Tuesday 1/16/07

Tuesday night we had a pretty good class. At least a good workout. Doug and I started with squats, Ales Lima, push-ups, wall sits, and then about an hour of kicking. We did Tendangan Depan, Sepak Ayam, Double Sepak Ayam, and Sepak Bulat. Then we did a little stretching. I need to do much more of that...

After that, we went through tangkapan, penjebakan, pencegah tangan, and pertukaran. After that we went through Jurus Tiga several times. We still ended by around 9:45p so that wasn't too bad. Sometimes we go later and accomplish less it seems...

We also did some more stretching after the kicking portion. It felt good because my back was getting stiff by then. I'm getting old.................

Anyway, it was a good workout, and though it was a pretty simply structured class, it was good. I fully expect that Rocco and Doug will be through Level 3 by the end of the month (if Level 2 looks good) and we can put some time into the material.

Saturday we should be filming most of the rest of the material for the Pisau - I hope - and I'll get that edited and posted soon after. My freelance work has slowed a bit so I should have some time to get it done. Woo Hoo!

Pencak Silat class 1/13/07 and Future Works

Selamat Readers, Students, Friends;

Saturday's class was good. We did a lot of pisau filming. (Thanks Rocco and Doug!) We filmed the jurus2 Pisau, dasar, Ales, masukan pisau, masukan pisau monyet, masukan pisau pendek, masukan pisau kombinasi, and it seems like we may have filmed more but I can't remember.

Doug and Rocco worked on Beladiri Pisau Satu and dua. We put beladiri pisau satu on film with more to come. Hopefully next weekend we'll get the rest of the pisau material on film and I'll get it edited shortly after that. We already had some of it on film that we shot a few months back so for some of it, unfortunately I have duplicate material, but that's okay because I can pick and choose what material I want to use that will communicate the material better.

There's a lot to put on this DVD so it may end up being 2 DVD's. I'm not sure at this point. I will abbreviate the material as much as I think I can considering that a person will be viewing this material after they have already completed 9 other levels. In any case, I am excite to be at this point in the material because I am finally on the downside of filming - at least the raw material for the levels.

I will probably make a few specialty books or videos or both to accentuate certain elements that don't initially make themselves apparant. For instance, all of the monyet that is found in the system, all of the boar, and all of the ular. These are things that you'll recognize when you see the movements but may not have seen isolated with the principles that they utilize.

I would also like to make a linking video for those who are studying primarily from dvd. This would be a dvd that might clearly show how things might link together. The main issue I need to overcome on that DVD is figuring out a way to teach it so the principle is passed and not techniques...

There is also a strong possibility that an explosive entries DVD will be made. This is something that I didn't recognize was necessary but working with Rocco and Doug, they have helped me to understand the necessity for such material. This is a "rubber meets the road" type of DVD that will elevate your skill if you don't know how, or you don't know what you do - when it works.

Somewhere in all of this there is the possibility of producing a series of DVD's on the jurus2 like I have with jurus satu.

Lastly, there is the possibilty of redoing some of the earlier dvd's. There are small elements here and there that have evolved and the presentation might be clearer and more concise. I would also like to make another attempt at them to share some of the passion I have for the material. I certainly don't have the same effect with people on video as I do in person and I am working on it.

From the standpoint of writing I have already begun the third book. It was my intention to add more of the physical material in it, but I may forgoe that and make the book a strictly spiritual - phsychological/emotional book. It probably will not be as large as the latest book but it may take longer to write... I'll just have to see as it goes along. That's one of the joys have self-publishing --- I can change my mind! :)

Pencak Silat Class 1/2/07

Tuesday's pencak silat pertempuran class was a pretty good class. We mostly worked on levels 2 and 3 but of course included the use of a knife in that as well to give a slightly different perspective. It was a pretty good turnout. Nick and Aaron came over from Tampa and of course Rocco and Doug were there as well. That was good because it gave Doug and Rocco other people to train with.

For a little while Nick and I did Main Terus or Permainan while Rocco, Doug, and Aaron did explosive entries with the pisau. I'm not sure who lost over on the pisau side...

For the most part we worked all of the various entries to include: Masukan Tangan, Masukan Sepak, Masukan Lutu, Masukan Siku, and Masukan Kaki. We also did Jurus2. On the level 3 stuff we went through checks, trapping, catching, and exchanging as well as jurus 3.

Nick demonstrated the Jurus-jurus Kombinasi of PSP for Jurus Satu and Tiga. I also had an opportunity to teach him Jurus Tangan Lima, and Jurus Monyet Lima. I showed him how the Jurus Kombinasi Lima works but I don't think his mind was absorbing too much by that point.

One time I went over how to apply pisau to the jurus-jurus tangan and I demonstrated Jurus Pisau Satu and Lima for Nick. Aaron and Nick also got a bit of training in the Pisau Grip Switching and Hand Switching. It was brief but felt good to share it with people eager to learn.

One theme of the night was headbutts.... I gave a few headbutts to Nick and Aaron and I smacked heads at one point. I ended up with a walnut sized knot above my eye which is since growing darker and darker. My glasses caused me to get a nice blood blister next to my eye too. It's been a few days and it still feels pretty good (sarcasm people, sarcasm).

Pencak Silat Christmas

The pencak silat seminar in Milwaukee hasn't happened and shows no signs of happening.
As I role into this new year, I am looking at the past year of teaching and the development of PSP. It has been slow as far as growth is concerned. Perhaps even stagnant. We've had new people join. Some in Spain, and others around the country, California, Georgia, and Iowa to name a few. Yet, there is something that needs to happen to bring up the training and interest. I'm not sure what it is and I am open to new ideas...

I continue to work on new training materials, and new approaches to the same material. For instance, the addition of headgear in our current classes has added a much needed realistic aspect to the training. It has caused us to work harder at understanding and applying the material and doesn't allow our silat to be just "bunga" or flower.

Nick came to class last Tuesday, as did Todd, Rocco, and Doug. It was a pretty good class. We went over Level 3 primarily, focusing on catches, checking, trapping and counter-trapping, as well as exchanges. A few put headgear on and were able to let loose a little. Even with headgear and gloves, you still can't let it fly because of the structure and power generation that PSP provides.

Well, Nick is getting some interest in his Pencak Silat Association. That's exciting! I've wanted that for a long time and I'm glad he has the energy, influence and time to get it going. Those are three things that seem to wane back and forth in my life with all of the other things going on and the other aspects of teaching and producing materials for students.

Look for another post soon as I reflect more...

Pencak Silat class 12/16

Silat class was good today. We worked on explosive entries with a knife. As well, we worked on countering the entry. The goal was to limit the countering to a single counter and the attack to a single attack and we used a fixed distance for the entries. Probably about 3.5 feet but I don't know for sure what the distance is.

The basic premise was for one person to be explosive and try to cover the distance in a way that cause the other person to get cut or stabbed. Thought it might seem obvious, the goal of the other person was to Ales and counter. It was a good exercise and the guys (Rocco and Doug) got a good sense of the necessity for strategy and a bit better sense of the danger that can accompany a knife attack (though i doubt anyone in my classes really didn't think knife was dangerous...). They also got a better sense of when they telegraph and how to read another persons attack through the concept of zoning. Zoning is a concept that is hard to explain but good fighters use quite a bit and from what I've been taught, silat is based on zoning in one way or another. I also taught them a few "cheats" for dealing with a good deal of knife attacks.

After we did these drills for awhile, we went back to trapping with pisau. We only had time to work the first four penjebakan with pisau but it was good for them to see how it might come together and how you could use the idea of penjebakan to develop offensive strategy for pisau explosive entries. We only just touched on the idea but it will grow because it is a healthy seed of thought and ideas...

Saturday 12/9 Pencak Silat Class

Today it was just Doug and I. We worked levels 2 and 3. We put some thigh pads on for the knee entries. I found them at the martial arts store in downtown Orlando. They work good for the hitting but the suck as far as staying on. The design is pretty worthless that way. So doug and I have come up with a good idea that would be worth pursuing to make them better and perhaps someday I'll get a chance to make a pro-type.

We also put on some headgear and some open-finger gloves and threw some punches like we meant it. We started off pretty normal, but we worked the checks (pencegah Tangan) pretty good, firing combinations to check the check so-to-speak. Doug found out that when you trust them they work pretty good, but when you don't... all kinds of things start going wrong.

After that we also worked exchanges against multiple attacks. It felt good to be responding to real-time, real-power attacks again. It's been awhile since I've been able to train that way and of course, for Doug and Rocco it's really just doing it for nearly the first time. (Rocco wasn't there today, but that's okay because I got to play :-)

Anyway, we went through all of the Masukan and all of the level 3 stuff except for Penjebak or trapping. I started to film but then all this noise started arising like a chorus around us so I stopped. Of course within about 10 minutes so did all the noise... happens every time. I did get jurus satu pisau filmed at least and I'll do it one at a time if necessary until I get them done.

I haven't made any progress on Level 9 but it should be all filmed...

Holy Crap! Cold Silat class

Well, I'm just about frozen... It's like 48 degrees right now but there's around a 20 mph wind and class was flippin' cold tonight. Everyone was wearing their sweatshirts and other clothes to try and keep warm.

We worked on evasions against a stick. It was interesting to see Rocco and Todd work through it. Todd has a lot of Kali to sort through but Rocco did quite well actually. Rocco made a pretty good run at it and for the most part did okay.

They worked the Ales as well as Masukan Tangan and Masukan Kaki. We also did some "what if's" scenario stuff and that was interesting. Baseball swings, etc.

Anyway, glad it's over. It'll take about an hour to warm up I think... I know it's colder in other parts of the country (like Wisconsin) but dang, I'm used to Florida weather - at least a little - and it's cold tonight.
